BAME staff network group host third ‘Standing in our Shoes’

Staff in Milton Keynes sat down with Claire Murdoch, CNWL Chief Executive and Professor Dorothy Griffiths, CNWL Chair to discuss topics such as, career development and leadership opportunities for Black and Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME)  colleagues.

‘Standing in our Shoes’ is a chance for staff to express their thoughts openly with two of our most senior leaders and reflect on what is going well and what can be improved.

During the session, staff feedback on:

  • Promotion of BAME leadership programmes
  • Milton Keynes staff development especially for women
  • Mentoring and appraisals
  • Unconscious bias
  • Retention
  • Interview panel representatives

Claire and Dot addressed some of the issues above and encouraged staff to take ownership of their careers and use resources available to them.

Claire said: “Our Trust invests heavily in development opportunities including leadership programmes – please use them! Please seek out our coaching and mentoring schemes, whilst also making sure you talk to managers about your appraisals.”

The session ended with Claire and Dot both committing to return to Milton Keynes to measure the outcome of listed actions.

The BAME staff network group will be hosting the next ‘Standing in our Shoes’ event in Brent on 5 November 2019.
